SOME WORDS FROM THE AUTHOR:
In the first couple of years of my teaching career in Chicago, I learned quickly about Lane Tech at the corner of Addison and Western; in fact, I would say Lane Tech and Wrigley Field were among the first landmarks with which I became familiar. Stepping foot into Lane one evening to drop off a resume sealed my fate. The massive murals on the walls, the hundreds of city-championship plaques suspended in what seemed like mid-air, and the early 20th century architecture intrigued me and I wanted, under no uncertain terms, to work in that building. Well, my wish came true and in the years I have worked in her hallowed halls and classrooms, I have been not only a teacher of English, but a student of the tradition and history of Lane. Many thanks go to the Lane Tech Alumni Association for trusting me to create this oral history. Special thanks to Dr. Barbara Cook and Mary Beth Ficht for helping me gather names, facts, and stories, not to mention, their patience in getting this project off the ground.
